EverStart lawn mower batteries are 12-volt U1 batteries for riding mowers, lawn tractors and zero-turns. Walmart carries four of them, from 230 to 340 cold cranking amps. Match the U1 or U1R terminal layout on your old battery and you’re set.

Choosing an EverStart U1 Battery
Check the posts first. Stand in front of the old battery with the terminals facing you and note which side the positive (+) post is on. A U1R has the posts reversed compared with a U1. If your cables only just reach, the wrong layout won’t fit.
Then pick the power. A small single-cylinder mower is fine with the U1-7 at 230 CCA. Bigger twin-cylinder tractors and zero-turns, or mowers that start hard in early spring, are better served by the U1-340 at 340 CCA.

Walmart lists reserve capacity rather than amp hours. Reserve minutes × 25 ÷ 60 gives a rough figure.

Lawn Mower Battery Care Through the Year
Most mower batteries don’t wear out from mowing. They die over winter, sitting flat in a cold shed.
Wake it up
- Charge it fully before the first start
- Clean and tighten the terminals
- Check the voltage: about 12.6 V when full
Keep it working
- Mow long enough to recharge after starting
- Keep grass clippings off the battery
- Check the hold-down after rough ground
Get ready to park
- Top it up with a full charge
- Clean off dirt and corrosion
- Note the date and voltage
Store it right
- Keep it on a maintainer, or
- Disconnect it and store it cool and dry
- A full battery resists freezing, a flat one may not
How to Replace a Riding Mower Battery
It takes about 15 minutes with a wrench or socket. The battery usually sits under the seat or the hood.
Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep metal tools from touching both posts at once.
- Park and shut downEngine off, key out, parking brake on.
- Negative cable off firstThen the positive. Note which side each one was on.
- Lift out the old batteryUndo the strap or bracket and keep the small terminal nuts.
- Fit the new oneSame direction as the old one. Positive cable on first, negative last, then refit the strap.
- Recycle the old batteryTake it back to Walmart or another battery retailer. Lead acid batteries shouldn’t go in the trash.

What’s the difference between a U1 and a U1R battery?
Same size case, but the terminals are reversed. Buy the one that matches your old battery so the cables reach.
Can I put a car battery in my riding mower?
Usually not. Car batteries are much bigger and heavier than the U1 tray is made for. Stick with a U1 or U1R.
Why does my mower battery die every winter?
Small batteries drain on their own while parked, and many mowers have a small draw even with the key off. Charge it in the fall and keep it on a maintainer or disconnect it.
