Signs Your Battery Is Failing
- The engine cranks slowly, worst on cold mornings
- You hear clicking when you turn the key or press start
- Headlights and dash lights dim while the engine starts
- The battery or charging light comes on
- The case looks swollen, cracked or wet
- White or blue-green crust keeps building up on the terminals
- The battery is more than three to five years old
A slow start can also come from a weak alternator or a loose cable, so have the battery load tested before you replace it. If it just went flat after sitting, a charger or maintainer may bring it back.
Check It With a Voltmeter
Leave the car off for a few hours, then measure across the two terminals. These are typical resting readings for a 12-volt flooded battery at room temperature.

Reads low? Charge it fully and test again the next day. A battery that can’t hold about 12.4 volts after a full charge is usually near the end. AGM batteries rest a little higher when full.

Walmart doesn’t build them. Owners on the BobIsTheOilGuy forum report EverStart batteries made by Clarios and by East Penn, depending on the size and region. Clarios also builds DieHard and Duralast batteries, according to SlashGear.

Most car batteries last about three to five years. Owners report as little as 1.5 to 2 years from Value batteries and 8 to 11 years from some Maxx batteries. Heat, short trips and electrical drain shorten life the most.
